Ways To Keep Your Pet Healthy

By Margaret Burgess

The family pet is an important part of American homes, often just like part of the family itself. Of course, we don't go to the extent of inviting our pets over to the dining table, but our love for them is very clear. That's why our pets' health is almost as important, if not as important as our own health. Your cuddly critters can be ensured of a longer life and good health through these simple tips.

An annual vaccine is of great importance to your pets. There have been safety issues, though, that have made some pet owners reluctant to vaccinate their animals. That still shouldn't stop you from having your pets vaccinated, as it may help them avoid contracting certain deadly diseases like the canine parvovirus. You can protect your pets from these diseases with a standard vaccination, and save money in the long run - they can be very expensive to treat otherwise. Without vaccination, therapy for these illnesses can cost you more than a grand of hard-earned money. Vaccines are almost always the cheaper way to go.

Take your pets to regular dental check-ups. Pets are just like the rest of us and need to have at least semi-regular dental check-ups. If your pet dog, for instance, regularly eats human food, it is especially important for it to get a check-up. For pets, tooth diseases can easily lead to more serious kidney, heart and liver illnesses. There have been a few studies released showing that four fifths of pets aged 3 upwards have existing dental diseases. To avoid the risk of dental disease in pets, brushing your pets' teeth is the best thing to do, even if we admit it may not sound too appealing to some. Our pets' dental care benefits the most from a preventive approach.

Guarding against obesity in our pets is the last thing to be wary of. Maintaining our pets' diet and keeping it balanced can usually help against obesity. Shopping around the market for quality pet food brands that ensure our pets' health is a good way to go about this. Overweight pets may seem cute on the surface, but be aware that an overweight or obese pet can develop serious health problems.

Among the health problems an overweight pet can acquire are joint pain and arthritis, as well as cardiovascular issues. Make sure your pet gets the right amount of exercise every day for best results.
