Is Your Dog Getting Regular Veterinary Care?

By Jewel Chesson

Dogs are often thought of as man's best friend and as a part of the family. Don't you usually nudge your family and friends to seek good medical care? Isn't your suggestion to seek medical attention part of caring about them?

The same goes for your dog. They need to see their doctor on a regular basis as well. Many dog owners only think of taking their dog to the vet if the dog is hurt or is feeling sick.

It's very important that the dog see the vet for regular checkups as well. In fact, some very expensive appointments could have been less costly if the dog had been seen more regularly.

Here are some reasons why taking your dog to the vet is important:

Shots. Dogs must receive regular shot to ensure they won't become ill. Vaccines are necessary to prevent many dangerous diseases and without them your friend won't be around for very long. If a dog is not given its shots, it can become sick with some serious illnesses which can be very expensive to treat. Your dog needs to be checked for ear mites. Ear mites are common with dogs. Regular visits with a vet can reduce the occurrence of this type of nuisance for your dog. The vet is able to assess the severity of the infestation and can prescribe medication to take care of it. Untreated ear mites can continue growing in the tissues until they get to the dog's brain, causing death.

Fleas and Ticks. These are also common among dogs. They should be treated immediately. The vet is able to detect and treat an infestation.

Worms. Worms are also common with most dogs, but since there are many different types of them, only your vet can determine the type of infestation and the right treatment.

Take care of your dog's teeth. Your vet can clean your dog's teeth, and also share tips you can use to clean them yourself. Keeping the dog's teeth clean is very important, because bacteria can grow out of control.

Bacteria can cause many problems, so cleaning the dog's teeth can prevent you from spending a lot of money later to correct other health issues.

You should see your dog's health as important as that of any other family member. Prevention of ailments is always the key to a long and healthy life, so take care of your dog and get them checked on a regular basis.

A vet knows how to recognize many ills your dog might experience, sometimes even before their onset. Your dog could live to a ripe, old age with the proper care and the watchful eye of his veterinarian.
