Three Unique And Unusual Pets

By Robert Trivett

You just might find it right to get a non-traditional pet if you're currently wanting to buy one. Dogs and cats may still be the most popular and conventional choices, but there are other animals that could make great pets as well.

Before buying a new pet, always consider the reasons you want to buy one in the first place. Having the right reasons is very essential. To use an example, buying a turtle won't be the best way to go if you need an animal companion around the house. It would be a better suited pet for parents with young children who haven't had any pets yet. You may want to consider these other pets as useful, though unusual alternatives.

A lot of people may be turned off by rodents, but gerbils, mice and hamsters do make good pets for many others for quite a few reasons. This is because they are easy to feed, easy to care for and don't take up that much space. But don't get too attached to them as these rodents, may they be hamsters, mice or gerbils, don't have the longest life span compared to most other pets. Make sure to give your rodent pets the proper maintenance. Beware of nasty odors if your rodent cage isn't cared for properly.

Due to their recent rise in popularity, hermit crabs are another unusual kind of pet to consider, and they're available in most stores. Though a hermit crab is neither cuddly nor friendly, it does have some distinct advantages. Since hermit crabs drink from a sponge and also change shells and burrow, young children may find them interesting. Hermit crabs don't require much maintenance except for keeping their drinking sponges wet.

Prairie dogs, strangely enough, are also gaining in popularity among pet owners. Prairie dogs are usually inquisitive and their personalities are worth mentioning in detail. This is because most prairie dogs raised as pets do not try to escape their new habitats. Prairie dogs can run free around the house, though they can also be litter box trained for convenience. We must warn you, though, that prairie dogs like to chew. Prairie dogs need to be trained properly so that they only chew on designated objects, instead of damaging your house property and clothing. Prairie dogs are still considered wild animals, so we advise only buying from a reputable dealer.

There are many other choices if you're in the market for a strange or different pet. In summary, these three pet options are sensible choices and one doesn't have to confine himself or herself to dogs and cats.
