Condo Quality

By Robert Baker

Anyone pet parent of a cat probably has a lot of cat furniture. Have you made the mistake of buying an inexpensive condo online only to find it was torn to pieces in a month? Do not feel embarrassed, it is easy to be fooled by cheap knock product that looks good, but are covered with fleece, faux carpet or "looped" carpet.

If you were one of the many, fooled by a cheap price and depending on your cat's habits, it probably did not last as long as you thought and everyday you were faced with pieces of the carpet all over your floor. If you bought a quality cat condo it undoubtedly was covered with a plush carpet that withstood the rigors of "crazy" cat play. Most purchasers of cat condos do not realize that there are as many as 12 grades of carpet in the industry.

What does grading mean to you? You definitely do not want anything in the lower three grades. Those are thin enough to see through and are generally used in rental properties and called "builder's grade." The medium grades have 6 levels and can last 5-15 years. These are the carpets that most people use. The highest grades would simply be a silly use on a cat condo. Wool carpeting on a cat condo, does your home have wool carpeting?

One of the most important issues is how the company adhered the carpet to the condo. Many are laid with glue. This glue is toxic to your pet companion and can give off VOC or toxic gases. It can cause symptoms of a cold all way through to cancer. Definitely not a bargain! Additionally, "loop" carpet can cause severe damage to your cat's nails!

You are the customer and you should spend time asking your potential cat condo manufacturer how they create their condos. Is the sisal oil treated? Has the carpet been treated with a fabric protector? If so, is could be toxic to your cat that loves you dearly. Do they have a return policy? These are all important questions to ask before you spend your money.

Your cat's health is in your hands. These simple things will end up saving you a lot in the long run. Your cat will appreciate living a long and healthy life as well!
