What Breed Of Cat Makes For A Good Pet?

By Frank Woods

A cat is a very popular pet and there are many breeds to choose from. If you are like most people, you don't know much about them. In order to help you to make a choice about breeds, here is some useful information.

Do you want a cat that can entertain himself and not get into mischief? The Sphynx, Rex, British Angora and Siamese cats definitely do not fit this classification. They like to romp around and prowl like a patrolling lion. If on the other hand you want a pet full of fun as your house companion, then you can choose any of the aforesaid breeds. The Rex is full of antics and will be an entertaining companion.

You also need to take into account their physical and personality traits. The hair for example is a matter for consideration. Cats with long hair need additional attention which is a problem if you can't spare the time. You cannot choose a long haired cat knowing that you won't be able to give the required attention to caring for the coat. With its hair matter and all tangled up, your cat will look like a stray. It is also liable to catch a disease if it is dirty.

Vocal cats are often something that many people either consider or want nothing to do with. These breed are very vocal. Many cat owners do not have a problem with them, others realize that communicating with them is necessary and that in some cases, it isn't the right choice.

Attitude is your next determining factor. Most cats are devoted to their master and love to be cuddled, but there also some breeds that are indifferent to people. Some cats want the attention while others do not. Choosing your cat depends on what you want your cat for.

The following are cats that are playful and love the company of children:

Snowshoe

Maine Coon

Ragdoll

Abyssinian

The Tonkinese cat

Himalayan Persian

Reserved Breeds:

Nebelung

The Russian Shorthair

Norwegian Forest Cat

Lastly, choose if you would like to go with a kitten or an abandoned older cat. The matter for consideration is that you have to train a kitten, while adult cats have developed character and habits. You can find many breeds of kittens to choose from at the local cat show and you can look for them at your local humane society as well. Adopting from an animal shelter has the added benefit of helping with its decongestion. The information above should give you a good idea of the breed of cat that you will want to own.
