The Basics Of Good Kitten Care

As a newbie to a litter of kittens, the thought of kitten care may be intimidating. Kitten care requires a reasonable basic understanding of the job at hand. More often than not, the mother will look after her kittens quite adequately, however you will need to check in with the new family every now and then. However, if the cat decides to not look after her kittens in the way she should, your work will be cut out for you - ranging from bottle feeding to socializing the kittens.

It is fun looking after kittens and watching them grow but you will notice just how helpless new born kittens can be.Nurturing your kittens well will see them grow to be healthy and strong cats. The one thing that amazes is the speed with which kittens grow in 6 weeks. This is a critical stage in the kittens development and there are certain things that you should not do in this period.

Be very aware that diet is vitally important. Do not just feed any food to your kittens and definitely not dog food! Kitten food is especially engineered to provide the essential nutrients and vitamins needed for healthy growth. Many would think that specialist foods are all marketing hype from pet food manufacturers but this is not the case. Millions of dollars in development and research is spent to create a specialist pet food.

If you want a social cat then try bonding with the kitten early on with lots of cuddles and love. Let the kitten experience the joy of human company early on and the chances are you will have a loving and sociable cat to enjoy. Obviously there are no guarantees with this as cats are cats and some plainly enjoy their own company but it is important to try and socialize the kitten as best you can.

Toys are the one thing we love giving kittens. Just be sure that whichever toy you get is not a danger to the kitten. Toys it could choke on or loose bits of string or wool should be played with only when you have the kitten under observation

Just the use of a simple plastic straw is a perfect toy for a kitten. It will offer hours of amusement to the kitten and is perfect for teething on. Finding toys for a kitten is simple - just go to your local pet store or search on-line for kitten toys. If the toy is specifically designed for a kitten it will have no toxins or harmful substances in it and will not shred, thus becoming a threat to the kittens health.

Common sense and your own natural instincts will most likely take care of most issues in kitten care. But if your cat is pregnant then it is advisable to get all the information you can regarding the basics of good kitten care.
